地道英語(yǔ)
Crank up 調(diào)高,增強(qiáng)
內(nèi)容簡(jiǎn)介
“Crank up” 原指用曲柄 “crank” 來(lái)調(diào)高機(jī)器運(yùn)轉(zhuǎn)的速度。而在英語(yǔ)口語(yǔ)中,“crank up” 表示提高某事的強(qiáng)度,比如 “crank up the heat(調(diào)高暖氣)”、“crank up the volume(調(diào)高音量)” 等等。“Crank up” 還可以用來(lái)表達(dá) “提高,增強(qiáng)” 哪些東西?聽(tīng) “地道英語(yǔ)” 主持人菲菲和 Phil 如何在日常對(duì)話中使用 “crank up”。

Feifei?
大家好,歡迎收聽(tīng) BBC 英語(yǔ)教學(xué)的 “地道英語(yǔ)” 節(jié)目。在每期節(jié)目中,我們都會(huì)介紹一個(gè)英語(yǔ)母語(yǔ)人士或講英語(yǔ)流利的人會(huì)用到的表達(dá)。I'm Feifei.?
Phil
And I'm Phil.
Feifei
在這期節(jié)目中,我們要介紹一個(gè)動(dòng)詞短語(yǔ) “crank up”。我和 Phil 將先用英語(yǔ)為大家講解它的用法,最后再由我用漢語(yǔ)進(jìn)行歸納總結(jié)。
Phil
How are you, Feifei??You look tired.
Feifei
Oh, that's a bit rude! Although, it is true. I have a new neighbour – every time I try to go to sleep, my neighbour cranks up the volume of his music. It's driving me crazy!
Phil
Oh no! But that does give us a phrasal verb to learn in this programme – 'crank up'. It can mean 'turn up'?– but can you tell us a bit more about it?
Feifei
Yes. So, it might actually help if you think about an old machine – a 'crank' is a handle that you turn to make something happen. When we use 'crank up', we mean to increase the intensity of something – like the volume on my neighbour's speakers.
Phil
And it's not just volume – it can be the intensity of anything. We often use it metaphorically, so you can talk about cranking up your efforts to do something. So, if I really want to get fit, I need to crank up the level of my workouts.
Feifei
Yes, that's right. Here are some examples of people using 'crank up'.
Examples
I'm doing a course at the moment, and my teacher has brought forward the date of the exam, and that's really cranked up the pressure. I've got so much to study in no time at all.
I've got a half marathon coming up, so I've really got to crank up my training.?
I'm going to Poland. I need to crank up my efforts to learn Polish.
Feifei
So, 'crank up' is a phrasal verb. Phil, what else do we need to learn about it?
Phil
OK, with phrasal verbs, it's always important to know where to put the direct object. With 'crank up' you can either put it between 'crank' and 'up', or you can put it afterwards.?
Feifei
So, when it's cold you can crank the heating up, or you can crank up the heating.
動(dòng)詞短語(yǔ) “crank up” 的意思是 “調(diào)高,增強(qiáng)”,尤其是指 “增加某件事物的強(qiáng)度”。比如,“crank the volume up(調(diào)高音量)”。“Crank up” 中的單詞 “crank” 作名詞時(shí)的原意是老式機(jī)械設(shè)備上的 “曲柄”,這類零件通常用來(lái)調(diào)整輸出的功率。所以,“crank up” 還可以用來(lái)比喻 “付出更多的努力”。比如,你想給你的朋友張瑩加油打氣,就可以對(duì)她說(shuō) “Hey Zhang Ying, you need to crank your effort if you want to make it!(張瑩,想成功的話你可得再加把勁兒啊!)”
Phil
Hopefully this episode will help you crank up your vocabulary learning efforts.?
Feifei
Yes. And, we'll be back next time with another useful English phrase. See you!?
Phil
Bye.
