> 3D culinary revolution is coming
Researchers at Columbia University in New York have created a 3D printer that makes cheesecake.
A retrofitted, off-the-shelf 3D-printer was used; the printing head could pick up any of the seven food "inks" to add to the slice.
A blue laser was used to brown and crust the top surface of the graham cracker paste, Jonathan Blutinger, the lead author of the study and an engineer at Columbia’s Creative Machines Lab in New York, told USA Today.
Until now, most 3D-printed foods were made with uncooked ingredients, the researchers say.
But in research published Tuesday in the journal npj Science of Food, the engineers describe how their 3D printer made a cheesecake from seven ingredients: graham cracker, peanut butter, Nutella, banana puree, strawberry jam, cherry drizzle, and frosting.
The final result "tasted pretty sweet – in more ways than one," Blutinger said. “The cheesecake is the best thing we can showcase right now, but the printer can do a whole lot more. “We can print chicken, beef, vegetables and cheese. Anything that can be turned into a paste, liquid or powder.”
He expects restaurants will begin using food printers in the next few years, "for digital gastronomy and one-off food add-ons to class-up a dish or make something aesthetically appetizing."
When the first ones arrive, perhaps in five years or so, they will likely be less than $1,000, Blutinger said.
> ‘Relaxing and inspiration area’ becomes hit online
The "relaxing and inspiration area" set up in a library at Guangdong University of Finance & Economics has unexpectedly become a hit online.
According to the library staff, the "relaxing and inspiration" area has been set up for many years and is named to reflect its purpose, which has become popular among students. Currently, the library is continuously planning and improving the area to make it more comfortable for students.
The library director, Wang Zhongzheng, explained that the main purpose of setting up this special zone is to provide students with a place to relax, unwind, and inspire creativity after studying.
Students can contemplate, have a snack, and enjoy the beautiful city landscape outside.
Currently, the library has six "relaxing and inspiration areas" adjacent to the study and reading area, complementing each other.
The area is equipped with outdoor tables, chairs, greenery, and other facilities. The library is also planning to upgrade the zone by incorporating elements of tradition and modernity to better meet the needs of young students.
He believes that the popularity of the "relaxing and inspiration area" demonstrates a positive and simple way for young people to cope with stress, which is worthy of recognition and encouragement.
He also recommends that more schools and workplaces set up such an area to meet the needs of people who seek a peaceful and inspiring environment.
