Queen Elizabeth II, Britain's longest-reigning monarch in history, has died aged 96, Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday.

英國白金漢宮9月8日證實，英國女王伊麗莎白二世去世，終年96歲。伊麗莎白二世是迄今英國在位時間最長的君主。

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon," Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

白金漢宮在聲明中說：“英國女王伊麗莎白二世當天下午在蘇格蘭巴爾莫勒爾堡安詳地去世了。”

Her 73-year-old son Prince Charles will become Britain's new monarch, but he will be known as King Charles III, according to royal officials. Charles' second wife, Camilla, will be known as the Queen Consort.

"The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty The Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family. We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished Sovereign and a much-loved Mother. " King Charles said in a statement.

Britain's Prime Minister Liz Truss, appointed by the queen on Tuesday, said the country was "devastated" and called Elizabeth "the rock on which modern Britain was built".
